A large dark iron-rich basalt plain on the lunar surface. It's formed by cooling lava and appears smoother and darker than the lunar highland regions. The word "Mare" is Latin for "sea" since early astronomers believed they were bodies of water.
The Apollo 11 spacecraft carrying Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin landed in Mare Tranquilities or the "Sea of Tranquillity".
