Hot pixels are digital CCD camera pixels that produce charges much greater than they should based on the number of photons detected. A CCD camera contains millions of light-sensitive elements of which a few hot (bad) pixels are to be expected. Astronomers take additional "dark images", which are used in image processing software to eliminate the effects of hot pixels from the final image.
