The spectacular explosive end to the life of a high mass star. It occurs when the star has exhausted all of its fuel and subsequently collapses in on itself before exploding dramatically and expelling its outer layers into space at high velocity and with immense energy. The dead star left behind is either a neutron star, a pulsar or a black hole.

The Crab Nebula (M1) is the remnant of a Supernova that exploded in 1054 (credit:- NASA, ESA, and The Hubble Heritage Team (STScI/AURA))
