The shift in wavelength of light of a celestial object due to it receding from Earth. It's named redshift as the light is shifted towards the red end of the electromagnetic spectrum. Approaching objects are shifted to the blue end and therefore known as blueshift objects.
Redshift is typically due to the expansion of the Universe, which causes the wavelength of light to increase as it travels through space.
