Are red giant variable stars that have periods of at least 100 days and can vary be many magnitudes. The prototype is star Mira (ο Cet) which at its brightest can easily be seen with the naked eye (mag. +3) but at it's faintest requires at least a small scope to be easily seen (mag. +12).
