A Barlow lens is a diverging lens normally placed in front of the eyepiece to increase the magnification of the eyepiece. For example, a 2x Barlow doubles the magnification with a 3x Barlow lens tripling it and so on. It's named after 19th century English mathematician and physicist Peter Barlow who constructed a version of it in 1833.
