The gas and dust that exists between stars in a galaxy. It's almost a vacuum and is comparable to the best vacuums that can be created on Earth. The small amount of substance that exists consists of 99% gas of which 90% of this is hydrogen gas. The remaining one per cent is dust made up of mainly carbon and silicates.

New stars are born in cold regions of the interstellar medium, where particles condense and clump together.
