A natural light display also known as the "Polar Lights" that occurs when charged particles from the solar wind collide with atoms in the upper atmosphere. The resulting atmospheric ionisation produces a bright light display of varying colours. Auroras are predominantly seen from high latitudes locations close to the Polar Regions although they have been seen from much further south.

Auroras occurring in the Northern Hemisphere are called the "Aurora Borealis" or "Northern Lights". The Southern Hemisphere auroras are known as the "Aurora Australis" or "Southern Lights".
