The gas that's present between stars in a galaxy. It's almost a pure vacuum of which 90% of the gas is hydrogen and is replenished by stellar winds and supernovae explosions.
It's part of the interstellar medium that also contains dust in addition to the gas. New stars are born in cold regions of the interstellar medium where particles condense and clump together.
