Small galaxies that contain up to several billion stars. They are often defined as galaxies that have an absolute visible magnitude fainter than -18. For comparison, our Milky Way galaxy contains up to 400 billion stars with an absolute magnitude of -21.

The Large and Small Magellanic Clouds, which are satellite galaxies of the Milky Way are dwarf galaxies.
