An unidentified type of matter that makes up about 27% of the mass and energy in the observable universe. It doesn't account for ordinary matter, neutrinos and dark energy. Since dark matter emits no electromagnetic radiation it's literally dark. Although never observed directly, its existence and properties are inferred from gravitational effects.
Dark matter may be ordinary material or it could be made up of particles unknown to science not yet detected.
