The theory of general relativity was proposed by Albert Einstein in 1915. It states that mass and energy curve space-time and that gravity is the result of the curvature. Early experimental evidence was obtained by Sir Arthur Eddington when he measured light bending around the Sun from background stars during the Solar eclipse of 29 May 1919. This effect was exactly predicted by the theory.
